R. L. Ballard formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died early Monday morning, December 13, 2010, in the Wheat State Manor in Whitewater, Kansas, at the age of 95 years.
R. L. Ballard was born on September 13, 1915, in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, to Joseph Alonzo and Hattie (Gentry) Ballard. He grew up in Caddo County attending LaCross Rural School. Following his education he helped his father and neighbors with their farming operations. He married Alta Lou Betty Croney on July 28, 1937, in Eakley, Oklahoma, and they settled on a farm near Pocasset, Oklahoma. In 1942 they moved to Hunnewell, Kansas, where he worked on various farms. He entered the United States Navy on April 11, 1944, where he served in the South Pacific during World War II receiving the rank of Seaman First Class. Following his discharge on January 5, 1946, he returned to Hunnewell where he began working for Cities Service Gas Company. In 1948 they moved to Hugoton, Kansas, until 1964 when they moved to Blackwell to make their home. He continued working for the gas company as a repairman until his retirement in 1978. His wife preceded him in death on December 25, 1995, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell. He also held membership in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing and keeping his yard attractive. He loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Bill Ballard and wife Dreda of Edmond, Oklahoma; a granddaughter, Cynthia Krause and husband Gary of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; two grandsons, Russell Ballard and wife Deanne of Whitewater, Kansas, and Timothy Stewart and wife Jackie of Nampa, Idaho; six great grandchildren, Megan, Hailey and Cory Ballard of Whitewater, Kansas, Emily Johnson and husband Matt of Hugoton, Kansas, Matthew Lott and companion Lorena Melius of Rolla, Kansas, and Maggie Lott of Ulysses, Kansas; and four great great grandchildren, Emmi and Liam Lott of Rolla, Kansas, and Weston and Wyatt Johnson of Hugoton, Kansas.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rhuenell Stewart; three sisters, Nita Ballard, Nellie Gibson and Jewell Hardin; four brothers, Lero, Billy Glen, Foy and Ivan Ballard; and a granddaughter, Staci Poss.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 18th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with the Rev. Herb Berkley of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Casketbearers will be Russell Ballard, Cory Ballard, Phil Ballard, Tim Stewart, Matt Lott and Vince Hoehner.
