LOCAL DRIVER LOSES LIFE IN NEWLY PURCHASED CAR
Carl W. Young, 22, Hurt Fatally in Crash on Road 58.

Taking relatives for a ride in his newly purchased automobile, a 22-year-old Columbus man was fatally injured Saturday noon when the car went out of control on Road 58, southwest of Columbus, and turned over at least three times in a field.

The victim was Carl William Young, 735 Cottage avenue, father of a 15-month-old baby and an employee of Stadler Packing company here. He died at 5 o'clock Sunday morning without regaining consciousness.

Injured in the 1-car accident were two of his brothers, Mervel Young, 19 and Marlin Young, 18, and Mrs. Rose Young, 17, wife of Mervel. All have been released from the county hospital.

Thrown from Car.

Carl and Mervel were both thrown from the smashed automobile, but Mervel escaped with multiple abrasions and lacerations.

The fatal accident in Bartholomew county was one of the three in the Seymour state police post area Saturday. Charles Sheets, 71, North Vernon, was killed in a 2-car collision on Road 50 west of Versailles Saturday. Ben F. Dezarn, 18, Salem, was killed Saturday when his motorbike and a car collided on Road 31 near Seymour.

Near Strong Home.

The fatal accident on Road 58 occurred at a slight rise in front of the W.F. Strong residence, four miles west of Road 31A. The 1941 Mercury 5-passenger coupe was being driven west by Carl Young.

The car went over the rise and then went out of control as it shot down the other side. The right wheels went off the right side of the road. Sheriff authorities and state police said the car traveled along the edge of the road about 100 feet. then struck a guard post, shearing it at the ground.

The automobile swerved to the left side of the road, went down a slight bank into the edge of cornfield and started rolling. It finally came to a stop on its wheels, more than 325 feet from where it came over the rise.

Carl and Mervel Young were thrown out and were lying on the ground beyond the halted car.

Ora Crouch, who resides just west of where the car halted, was the first to reach the scene. Marlin Young was able to blow the horn of the car. Mr. Crouch said that he heard the continued blowing and ran from his home to the car.

Carl Young did not regain consciousness. His injuries included a severe head injury, severance of his spinal cord and a deep laceration of the neck.

Cut and Bruised.

The other two brothers and Mrs. Mervel Young has lacerations and abrasions and were suffering from shock. Mr. and Mrs. Mervel Young were released from the hospital Sunday. Marlin was given first aid.

Authorities said relatives told them Carl Young obtained the 1941 mercury coupe about a week ago and after meeting his brothers and sister-in-law Saturday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Young, near Parker's Lake, decided to take them for a short ride. The automobile was a total loss.

The accident was investigated by Deputy Sheriff Walter Johns and State Police Officer Earl Brown.
