Mrs. Jessie Merritt, 89, a long-time resident of Geneseo who later lived in Traer several years, died at 10:15 Wednesday night, September 5, 1962 in Woodlawn Convalescent Home in Waterloo, where she had been a patient about 2 years. She had been in failing health several years. Her body is at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart. Mrs. Merritt was born near Traer October 11, 1872, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Tedford, who were early residents of Geneseo township. She was reared in that community and was married to Oliver Merritt on February 22, 1894. They spent some time near Spencer, Iowa after their marriage, but returned to Geneseo and farmed 46 years on the farm in Geneseo now occupied by Myron Lindeman northwest of the Geneseo school.
Mr. and Mrs. Merritt retired in Traer in 1940, and Oliver died here on March 30, 1943. The widow and a daughter, Ruth, continued to make their home here for several years; then she lived with or near her other children until ill health required nursing care. Mrs. Merritt was a member of Geneseo Methodist church of which she and her grandfather Tedford was one of the founders. She was a charter member of the women's society of the church in Geneseo. She leaves a son Ray of Geneseo; the son Lee, in California; and two daughters, Mrs. Rodney (Helen) Speer of Dunkerton, Iowa and Mrs. Cecil (Jean) Cole of Greene, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. The daughter Ruth and a young son Merlin preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Geneseo Methodist Church with the Rev, Harold Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
