In 1894, in memory of his wife, Mary F. Hughes, who had died the previous year, Thomas built and endowed the Mary F. Ballentine Home for the Aged. It was one of the first local care facilities for elderly women who could no longer care for themselves. It is still in existence today, and is probably his most important, lasting legacy.
