Born in Walheim Fuerstenthum, Nassau, Germany, near Frankfort on the Main. At the age of 33, he left Germany along with his wife nee Marie Joh & their 4 children. Landed on Galveston Island Nov. 30, 1856. Traveled to Round Top, Tx., in Fayette County by wagon drawn by oxen. His wife Marie died only a few months after arrival. Occupation was a Wheelwright, a trade he learned from his father. Enlisted in the Confederate army June 9, 1862 and was captured July 4, 1863 at the "Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi". Phillip's second wife was Christina Zwernemann who helped him hide in the woods during the War and after being paroled from his capture at Vicksburg to avoid being conscripted into the army once again.
