Harley Chessy Foster was born to Alfred Scott Foster and Haydee Eleanor (Ryan) Foster on the island of Cayman Brac. He immigrated to Mobile, Alabama, on December 13, 1921. He married Alice Rachael Roberts on June 26, 1925; and they had three daughters: Genevieve "Genny," Alice Lanelle "Nell," and Delores "Fritzie." He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as a Boatswain's Mate 1st Class and became a naturalized U.S. citizen on May 26, 1948. He was an accountant almost all of his working career.

Granddaddy and Granny Foster lived in Mobile most of their married lives and raised their daughters there. During World War II, Granddaddy built a beach house in Gulf Shores, Alabama, from lumber he scrounged. The family spent many happy hours at that beach house. The beach house was destroyed by a hurricane some years after Granddaddy sold it, and condominiums instead of beach houses now fill the area. In their later years Granny and Granddaddy left Mobile for Florida, first to Stuart for a brief period, then to Delray Beach to be near two of their daughters.

Granddaddy's ancestors started out in England before immigrating to Jamaica and were later one of the families to settle Cayman Brac. Granddaddy traveled to Cayman Brac one last time with his oldest grandson before his health started to fail.

Granddaddy had eight grandchildren and now has great-grandchildren, some of whom he met before his death, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beautiful granddaughter Cynthia Ann "Cindy" (Clark) Thompson.
