Emmie Lou Hartin Williams was born April 28, 1908, to Robert Hilary Hartin and Eva Sexton Hartin in River Falls, Ala. She was reared in Opp, Ala., and graduated from Opp High School as salutatorian. She received her bachelor of science degree from Florence State University and attended Athens College, Troy State College, Alabama College and received her master of arts degree from George Peabody College which is now a part of Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
Emmie Lou began her teaching career at a one teacher school in Covington County, Ala., and taught in the schools in that county for nine years. She then taught in Limestone County for seven years, Athens City Schools for three years, Morgan County Schools for nine years and Decatur City Schools for 18 years. She retired in 1973 from Decatur's Oak Park Middle School with a total of 46 years in her teaching career.
Mrs. Williams was a member and often the president of many professional organizations. She was president of both the Athens and Decatur Teachers' Associations. She was a National Education Association delegate six years, and was a member of Alabama Education Association Citizenship and Elections Committees. She received the Pathfinders Award from the American Association of University Women for her efforts in uniting the two education associations, the all-black Decatur State Teachers' Association and the all-white Decatur Teachers' Association, into one organization, the Decatur Education Association. She was selected as their first president. She was also very active in the Alabama and Morgan County Retired Teachers' Associations. Mrs. Williams also held membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, and was selected recording secretary for two years and corresponding secretary for two years. She also served the Quester's Club as president.
She was a longtime member of the Beltline Church of Christ where her late husband, O.N. Williams, served as deacon.
Predeceasing Mrs. Williams were her parents, Robert Hilary Hartin and Eva Sexton Hartin; two brothers, Andrew and Bill Hartin; three sisters, Lottie Mae Stanley, Anne Gillis and Ouida Blackshear; her grandson, Wayne Williams Jr. "Buddy"; and her husband of 56 years, Ollis Nelson Williams.
Survivors include her son, Wayne and his wife, Beverly, of Carrollton, Texas; three grandchildren, Kathleen Williams Morton and her husband, John, of Centennial, Colo., Wendy Williams Didyk and her husband, Matt, of Plano, Texas, and Wade Williams and his wife, Crystal, also of Plano, Texas; and two great granddaughters, Rachel and Michelle Morton of Centennial, Colo. She is also survived by two sisters, Grace Brogden of Andalusia, Ala., and Jeannette Cowen of Montgomery, Ala., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
