George Wylie Davis Dies

Purcell Register, Purcell Oklahoma, by Callie Cardinal

George Wylie Davis died on January 5 at the age of 84 years and eight days. He was born Bowie (county), Texas on December 28, 1888. Wiley had gone to Wayne in the summer of 1903, then returned to Texas, and then in the spring of 1907 moved back to Wayne, Oklahoma accompanied by his brother Ben Davis . The two brothers settled in the Hopping community where they lived for a time with Gus and Gordon Hopping's. Ben worked for a while for Mr. J. E. Rimmer in his cafe and when he left here he lost contact with his family and the last time he was heard from was in 1921 so it has been thought that he died somewhere in California, where he was at the time.

Wylie was married to Miss Nellie Mayfield on November 12, 1912, and to this union was born four children, a son dying in infancy in 1929; a daughter Opal Davis Dickinson, of Maysville; a daughter Thelma Ruth McGowan, of Rosedale; a son B. C. Davis of Norman, all of whom survive. His wife died in 1964. The family had always lived in the Wayne and Rosedale communities until he moved to make his home in Broadlawn.

In addition to the children listed above, he is survived by a sister Mrs. Mae Williams, of Weatherford, Texas; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday morning at ten o'clock in the Wayne Church of Christ, with Ray Mayhue of Purcell and Frank Nitto, of Wayne, officiating under the direction of the Yoakum Funeral Home.

Pall bearers were grandsons, Charles Dickinson of Oklahoma City; Jimmy Dale Dickinson of Maysville; Benny McGowan and Mickey McGowan, Rosedale; Steve Davis of Norman; and Joe McGowan of Paoli. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery.
