John C. Hart, Sr., aged 73, one of the best known and highly respected citizens of this city passed away at his home, 409 North Mercer street, Thursday, November 13, following an extended illness. Mr. Hart had been in failing health for about two years. His condition developed a more critical stage two weeks ago and he gradually grew weaker until the end came last evening.
He was born at Washington, Pa., April 23, 1851, a son of William and Elizabeth Oliver Hart. he received his early education in the public schools of Washington after which he learned the marble cutting trade, serving his apprenticeship under the late Joseph Howarth, an American sculpter of Washington.
Mr. Hart came to New Castle, August 2, 1872, where he has been engaged in the marble and granite Monumental business since that time.
He was a faithful member for many years of the First Christian church of this city and for the past ten years had served upon the board of elders of the church. He was a member of the New Castle lodge, No. 69, B.P.O.E., and the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. Hart was married in New Castle June 15, 1876, to Ella T. McComb who with three sons survive him: John C. Hart, Jr., Robert B. hart and Walter S. Hart, all of this city. Two sons and one daughter preceded him in death, Mr. Hart's death occurring on the anniversary of his daughter's death fourteen years ago. He also leaves two brothers, Oliver L. Hart of Buffalo, N.Y., and Alexander W. Hart of Connellsville, Pa., and one sister, Miss Lydia O. Hart of Washington, Pa.
Funeral services will be conducted from his late residence, Monday, November 17, at 1:30. Intement private at Graceland cemetery.

Note: Actually, his brother Oliver L. Hart had predeceased him (died Jan 9, 1920 in NY) but apparently the family wasn't aware of it as the brothers had lost touch with one another.
