JOHN WILLIAM FUSSELL (1917-2010)

Bill Fussell, a loving father and devoted husband loved by all, passed away at home May 7, 2010 with many family members at his side.

Affectionately known as Daddy Bill to his family, friends, and caregivers, he was born April 11, 1917 in Camilla Georgia to Dr. Hinton Grady Fussell of Atlanta and Clifford Lane Mize of Athens, Georgia. He was raised in Camilla until the age of 13 at which time his family moved to Athens Georgia where he graduated from Athens High.

He served in the Navy on the battleship Mississippi where he was a fleet boxing champion. He later served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Following the war, he received a BS degree in industrial engineering from The Georgia Institute of Technology.

Later, while employed in the real estate operations of the US Postal Service, he obtained a Masters degree in city planning from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was also a Registered Professional Engineer. Bill spent most of his adult life in New York and Washington, D.C., but returned to his beloved Georgia upon retirement.

As an engineer, he was always teaching his children throughout their lives how to accomplish a task more efficiently. Being a member of "the greatest generation" he displayed honor, integrity, loyalty and many other positive attributes during his life. Throughout and to the end he never gave up on life or its experiences, finding beauty in everything and everyone. He was kind, generous, and compassionate all his life and was a wonderful father and grandfather.

Raised a Presbyterian, Bill served as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church in Falls Church, Virginia. He embraced life through his family. His love of God and people was expressed in his deeds, generosity, and the wonderful prayers that he presented at family gatherings. He taught by example and never forced his beliefs on anyone.

Bill was preceded in death by his brothers Hinton Grady Fussell Jr., Clifford Fussell, and sister Sarah Shiner and his beloved wife Irby Lou Cook Fussell with whom he shared 57 devoted years.

To celebrate his memory and life, his survivors include his daughters Charlotte McCabe Savignac, Charlton Lane (Thomas K.) Corish and Valori Fussell; grandchildren include Thomas K. Corish, Jr., John F. Corish, Caroline Corish, Briggs Savignac, and Jeannine Savignac; great grandchildren Ashley Corish (Matthew) Murphy, Juliette Corish, and Carlin Lane Corish; and great, great grandson Hudson Murphy.

Burial will be at Westview Cemetery next to his beloved wife, his mother and father, and his grandparents.
