Josiah M. Hammett passed from this life at his home in this city Monday, December 7, '03 at 3:00 a. m., aged 84 years, 11 months and 7 days.
He was born at Bowling Green, Ky., December 30, 1818. At the age of 9 years he removed with his parents to Marion county, Ky., who shortly after left Kentuck, (sic) locating in Peoria county, Illinois. On attaining his majority he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Frazier. To this union there were born ten children, eight of whom are living, viz: George T., Benjamin A., Francis W., Cornelius O., Albert D., William P., Mrs. Lillie V. Schroyer and Mary E. McAtee. Edgar and an unnamed child died in infancy. In 1866 he removed to Marshall county, and secured a homestead in section 20, Elm Creek township. It was while living on this farm that his wife, Rachel F., departed this life in June 1884.
In 1886 he contracted second marriage with Mrs. Minerva Carnvike McMahon. Services were conducted in the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon and interment made in Marysville cemetery.
