Services for John Weldon Easley age 87 of Tyler and formerly of Elkhart will be at 3:00 P.M. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Elkhart with Rev. Bill Gerenez and Rev. Clinton Bratcher officiating. Burial will follow in Guiceland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Palestine. Mr. Easley died Wednesday at Hospice Home Place in Tyler. John Weldon Easley was born in Elkhart on November 19, 1923 to Henry Archie and Mary Gibson Easley. He lived in Elkhart most of his life and was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He was a Christian gentleman who believed the Bible was God's instruction for daily living. Another member of the Greatest Generation has left us. Mr. Easley was a graduate of Elkhart High School and served in the European Theater during WWII in the US Army. While in Germany he was in the infantry with the Battle of the Bulge and saw action in over 50 battles. Upon his return home after WWII, he worked with the family trucking business, Geier Jackson Oil Company and Anderson county. Mr. Easley retired as a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkhart where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, and in various areas of church work for many years. He was also active in the Saline Baptist Association. Mr. Easley excelled in sports during high school and remained a devoted sports fan throughout life. He was considered a "master Storyteller", often a practical joker, and enjoyed playing dominoes with his friends. Above all, Mr. Easley was loved by his family and friends for his devotion, thoughtfulness, and honesty. He never tired of working for his God, church, family and friends. Mr. Easley was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Annie Pearl Easley, a sister Lucille Harrington, a brother Olen Easley and his beloved wife Gracie who passed away in 2004. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Linda and Norman Lamberth, of Tyler, grandson James Weldon Lamberth of Tyler, sisters-in-law Irene Easley, of Gorman, Lois Morehead of Elkhart, Adele Trigg of Elkhart and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks are extended to Mrs. Ginny King at Park Place and her nursing staff and Hospice of East Texas for their care, concern, friendship and love. Pallbearers will be Roy Bertrand, Joe W. Chaffin, Wesley Taylor, and members of Men's Cheerful Helpers Sunday School Class. Honorary pallbearers will H.C. Wilson, Ricky Oster, Jim Plyler, Herbert Franks, Tim Peters, Devoin Garrison and Joe E. Chaffin. Condolence calls will be received from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Saturday at Bailey & Foster, Palestine.
