Son of Heinrich Johann Fietsam and Judith Katherina Monken Fietsam. He was one of five brothers who immigrated to Texas from Germany on the Talisman in 1846. They attempted to make the difficult journey from the Texas port of Indianola to New Braunfels with their uncle Freidrich Franz Monken and his family. All of the family was ill from the living conditions and weather in Indianola. Along the way, their uncle's wife Christina Sauer Monken and Michael Fietsam, born 1822, died July 11, 1846 and were both buried along Spring Creek, north of Victoria, Texas. Three brothers -- William Fietsam, born 1826, died July 30, 1846; Friedrich Fietsam born 1828, died August 2, 1846; and Johann Joseph Fietsam, born 1820, died August 3, 1846 – died and were buried in Hochheim Cemetery, Hochheim, Texas.

Heinrich, Rosina, and Barbara Monken, children of Christina and Friedrich Monken, also died along the journey. Rosina died in a horseback riding accident, trying to bring medicine to ailing members of her family and the Jones family, farmers near Seguin, Texas, who generously took care of the sick travelers.

The surviving Fietsam brother -- Joseph George Fietsam, born Feb 12, 1825 – was nursed back to health by the Jones family. He died 1906 in Weimar, Texas.
