A diphtheria epidemic swept through Fayette County in 1863. Four of Thomas and Eunice's children, Minerva, 17, Charles (Luzerne?), 15, Marinda, 13, and Ira S, 11, died in October and November of that year of diphtheria. Their daughter, Melinda, 29, died in 1869.
