Charles first joined the Navy at about 17 years old. He was serving aboard the U.S.S. Bunker Hill when it sustained heavy damage from enemy fire. He would never speak of that experience.
He completed his 2-year sign-up in the Navy then he joined the U.S. Air Force for a 2-year hitch. When that hitch was over he joined the U.S. Army for 15 years of active service.
In 1966, he was offered a promotion to re-enlist and put on orders to Viet Nam. He resigned from active duty at the end of his current enlistment, and later joined the Tennessee National Guard, followed by the Oklahoma National Guard to complete his military retirement.
