J. S. Devereux died unexpectedly in 1856, just a few months before their son Charles was born. His will stipulated Sarah should live at Monte Verdi plantation until she remarried.

Sarah Ann Devereux married James Freeborn Garrison, Jr. on April 1, 1869; per J. S. Devereux's will, she and James moved to a house near Monte Verdi.

In the 1870 US Census for Rusk County, Texas, James and Sarah are living next to her son Albert and his family, and her son Charles is living with the Louis Booker family two houses away.
