Funeral services for John West Brown, 77, of Traer, whose death Thursday afternoon, December 15, 1949 caused by a stroke the day before was noted in last week's Star-Clipper, were held at 2 o'clock last Sunday afternoon in the Congregational church of Cedar Falls. Relatives and friends from the Traer community attended. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery beside his wife, who died a year ago last fall.
Mr. Brown had been a part of the business and industrial life of Cedar Falls and Waterloo for more than 30 years and was in the lumber business at Gladbrook before moving to Waterloo 31 years ago. He was born in Crystal township, a few miles southwest of Traer, November 6, 1872. He married Minerva Stoakes, of Traer, December 28, 1898. They lived at Gladbrook until 1905, when they moved to Waterloo, where Mr. Brown was vice-president of the William Galloway Co. for many years. The family moved to Cedar Falls in 1927, where Mr. Brown was one of the organizers of the Automatic Humidifier Co., which he managed from 1928 to 1942. He operated a farm implement business in Waterloo with his son for a few years before finally retiring. He is survived by a son, Hobart, of Cedar Falls, and a daughter, Mrs. H. L. Elwell, of Northwood, Iowa. Mrs. Brown died at Cedar Falls September 17, 1948, since which time Mr. Brown had divided his time between Cedar Falls and Traer, where two sisters. Mrs. Frances Read and Mrs. A. J. Farnham reside. He is also survived by a brother, Henry Brown, of Cedar Falls, and four grandchildren. He was a member of the Congregational church of Cedar Falls and had been a member of the Masonic order.
