Mary Frances Sexton

Mary Frances "Polly" Sexton, daughter of George William and Mary Ellen Anderson Sexton was born March 9, 1846, in Stewart County, Tennessee. Her father, George William was the son of Brittain Sexton who came to Stewart County from Wake County, North Carolina, about 1795. Three Martin sons of John W. and Matilda Martin married three of George William Sexton daughters.

Mary Frances "Polly" Sexton married Andrew Jackson Martin August 11, 1858 in Stewart County by Justice of the Peace, E.G. Sexton, (cousin of the bride.) Polly was only 12 or 13 years old. Andrew was 19.

In the 1860 census Andrew and Mary were living next to George Martin (Andy's brother) . The census was taken July 24, 1860. Andy and Polly had been married almost two years. The year ended with Mary seven months pregnant with their first son, James Henry. She was 14 years old.

Andrew enlisted in the Confederate Army in November of 1861 and was at Fort Donelson when General Grant captured Fort Henry and then marched on to Fort Donelson. Most of the soldiers there had only been in the army for two months and had very little military training. The winter weather was bitter cold and most of the men were sick when Fort Donleson surrendered February 16, 1862. Andrew and his brothers were shipped north to prison camps. Andy and James were exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi, September 5, 1862. They rejoined the 50th Tennessee at Jackson, Mississippi, under Captain E.G. Sexton. Polly lived close to her family while Andrew was in service.

The 1870 Census shows Andy and Polly living near Polly's parents in the 10th District of Stewart Co. According to the census, neither Andy nor Mary could read or write. By this time they had three children; James 9, Mary 6, and Reuben, 5.

Andy and Polly were still in 10th District of Stewart County in 1880. Sometime in the winter of 1884-5 Andy moved his family to Henry County, Tennessee. James, Mary and Reuben and families stayed in Stewart County. Andy had an open account at his son's (Reuben) general merchandising store at Wynn on Standing Rock Creek in Stewart County, and traded with him till his death in 1900.

Andy and Polly had nine children: James Henry, Mary Ella, Reuben Elexander, Margaret Matilda, William Andrew, Linnie Ann, George Walter, Daniel Lonzo and Hattie May.

Andy died in1900, and Mary Frances died June 20, 1909 in the Old 23rd District and each was buried in the Culpepper Cemetery. Andy and Polly attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and when the TVA prepared to flood the Kentucky Lake, their bodies were moved to the church cemetery.
