Son of WILLIAM SUMNER & HANNAH CLARK
Military: French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, Continental Army
Note: Pension records for his son Ebenezer Jr. state that he served under his father in 1776, and in 1778 he served on the Blaze Castle (Capt. James Munroe) which was captured by the British. He was then taken to Halifax where he remained for five months before he was returned during a prisoner exchange. Ebenezer Jr. was only credited for one years service for pension because the Blaze Castle was a privateer vessel and not under the command of the military, so therefore not eligible for pension.

FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR SERVICE
Served under Captain Ichabod Phelps's 7th Company (Hebron, CT) from September 1st-December 8th, 1755 in the Fort Edward Expedition.
Served under Captain Edmund Wells's 4th Company (Hebron, CT) from April 1st-26th November, 1756 in the Crown Point Expedition.
Served under Captain Robert Durkee's 10th Company (Windham, CT) from April 8th to August 28th, 1761. [listed as Dead erroneously- D.E.L.]
His complete service can be found in "Rolls of Connecticut Men in the French and Indian War, 1755-1762" by the Connecticut Historical Society, 1903 edition.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE
Served in the 2nd Connecticut (Wyllys's) Regiment and the 22nd Continental Infantry during the Revolutionary War from 1775-1776 as commander of a company. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant in April of 1775 after the original appointee, Elijah Blackman, was removed from consideration, and then was promoted to Captain. His record says that he was in Roxbury Camp near Boston, MA on Mar 9th, 1776, nearKingsbridge, NY (Camp Yonkers) on the 27th of September and the 3rd of October, 1776, was listed as "Unfit for duty" and "On furlough" on Oct 4th, 1776, and eventually was transferred to be a Captainof the Connecticut Militia, Storrs, on Feb 11th, 1777. Ebenezer fought (confirmed actions) during the Siege of Boston (Apr 1775-March 1776), Detachment at Battle of Breed's Hill (June 17th, 1775), the Battle of Long Island, also known as Brooklyn Heights (August 27th, 1776), and the Battle of White Plains (October 28, 1776). His complete service can be found in "Historical Register of Officers ofthe Continental Army During the War of the Revolution" by Francis B. Heitman.

The Bearer hereof Capt. Sumner in Colo. Wyllys's Regiment, has a Lieut. on Command with Colo. Arnold-whereby the Birth is at present vacant: Roger Hooker an Ensign belonging to the same Regiment a likely young Officer-and the only one who is willing to serve another Campaign, of the Company he at present belongs to-is desirous to serve in the Birth of the absent Lieut.-as likewise Capt. Sumner and the officers of his Company to have him; till the Lieut. should return: provided he can have the pay of a Lieut. and then resign, if there could not be a Birth for him. I beg Leave to inform your Excellency-that if he can be permitted to remain in the Service, agreeable to the above proposal-as he is the only officer of the Company in the present Establishment, who rema in the Service, he will probably be able to get a considerable part of the Company he at present belongs to-to engage for another Campaign: 1.

In 1781 Hooker was a brigade major in the Connecticut militia. Ebenezer Sumner was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in Spencer's regiment in May 1775 and was promoted to captain in July. Sumner served as a captain in the 22d Continental Infantry during 1776 and subsequently as a captain in the Connecticut militia. Samuel Wyllys (c.1738-1823), lieutenant colonel of Spencer's regiment, commanded the regiment while Spencer performed his duties as a Continental general. Wyllys served as colonel of a Continental regiment from 1 Jan. 1776 to 1 Jan. 1781 when he retired from the army.
