For a number of years he and his brother, Horace ran a Mercantile business. He sold out and later returned to the business with his son, John. In 1874, he retired from the Mercantile business and opened an insurance business with Orient Company of Hartford, Conn.
Mr. Bancroft was an abolitionist and took an active part in the under-ground-railroad.
Lived on West State Street.
