As noted in the above source, Capt. Whittier was first officer on the Clarissa B. Carver with Capt. Leroy Dow when Capt. Dow was taken ill and Capt. Whittier took command in India and brought the ship home. While in command of the Canton, he picked up the crew of the abandoned schooner Wigmore of Cherryfield, Maine 50 miles off Cape Cod. These men were later transferred to the schooner Steven Morgan bound from Boston to New York. The Canton was bound from Portland, Maine to St. Pierre, Martinique.
