Catherine (Downton) Gunn, 97, a longtime Springfield and Longmeadow resident, died Wednesday at a local nursing home.

She was an elementary school teacher in the East Longmeadow schools for many years.

Born in Braddock, Pa., she was a graduate of the former Central High School here and the University of New Hampshire.

She belonged to the Longmeadow Maternal Association, the Longmeadow Gardeners, and the Country Club.

She also belonged to the Springfield Women's Club, Garden Club, and Colony Club, and was a former director of Wesson Memorial Hospital Corp.

She was a Red Cross volunteer at Westover Air Base in 1942-45, and was active in many civic enterprises in Greater Springfield.

Her husband, Walter P. Gunn, died in 1966.

She leaves a son, Walter P. Jr. of Longmeadow; a daugher, Jane G. Fox of Califon, N.J.; a brother, Charles E. Jr. of Windsor, Conn.; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday morning in Longmeadow Cemetery . There are no calling hours, and Dickinson-Streeter Funeral Home is in charge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Library Association general fund at 693 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow, or the First Church, 763 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow, Mass., 01106.
