Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop for lifelong Owens Valley resident Alice Josephine Boothe. Barbara Crockett will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Brune Mortuary in Bishop.
Born Nov. 12, 1915, Alice died at the Bishop Care Center Nov. 23, 2010. She was 95.
Alice was born in Porterville. She and her family moved to Big Pine shortly after she was born. In 1926 her family moved to Bishop where she graduated from Bishop High School in 1933. After graduation, Alice worked at Bishop Union High School as secretary to the principal for five years.
In 1937 she married Dudley Boothe; they raised their family, owned and operated a ranching and cattle business, as well as the Rainbow Pack Outfit for the next 25 years.
She and Dudley were among the initial founders of Mule Days and they were named "Most Honored Packer" for the 1983 Mule Days celebration.
Alice joined the Bishop Museum and Historical Society when it was organized in 1964. She worked with the society through all the initial development of the Laws Railroad Museum. In 1974, she became the administrator of the Laws Museum and worked in that capacity for 23 years, retiring at age 80.
Alice was a member of the riding group "Sierra Cowgirls" in the 1940s, served as secretary for the Bishop Homecoming and Labor Day Association for many years and was also named Grand Marshal for the Bishop Homecoming event in 1993. She was a charter member of the Palisade Glacier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as an active member for 59 years.
Alice will be most remembered for her generous heart and strong love of family and friends. Many weekends Alice's kids, their families and often many friends would gather at Alice's home on Sunland Drive for big family dinners. She was a wonderful cook and hostess; it wasn't uncommon for her to serve 25-50 people at these gatherings. She made everyone feel welcome, treated them as family, and made sure they were well fed before they departed. She was a strong supporter of her children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's endeavors and would attend all events possible to cheer them on.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Boothe; and grandson, Mike Boothe.
Alice is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jill Boothe and Roy and Beverly Boothe; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Gary Dougherty and Linda and Mike Weier; grandchildren, Susie and Cornus Dillard, Scott and Cindy Cimino, Jeff and Brandie Boothe, Chance and Becky Johnson and Mandi Tucker; great-grandchildren, Brent, Josie and Wil Dillard, Nora and Nate Cimino, Michael and Morgan Boothe, Cade and Lexi Johnson and Wyatt and Lily Wagoner; sister-in-law, Helen Dixon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
