Illinois. Capt. 505 Prcht. Inf. 82 ABN, DIV. WW 2.

Capt. Stefanich had two Purple Hearts (one with Oak Leaf cluster), a Silver Star and a Bronze Star according to the U.S. Army dedication of his plaque commemorative pamphlet.

Captain Stefanich was killed in action at the Sint-Jansberg near Nijmegen in The Netherlands during Operation Market Garden. A lost glider landed in the middle of the line of fire of Germans hiding in the woods of the Reichswald. Captain Stefanich and a group of his paratroopers didn't hesitate to help the men in the glider. Under heavy fire they rushed to the glider and helped its crew to escape to safety. Captain Stefanich was killed in open field while returning to their lines. He was one of the best company CO's.

His last words were for his "boys" who stood around him with tears in their eyes...
