Howard enlisted in the Spanish American War when he was twenty on years of age and was in Company K which was organized at Vancouver, Washington for casual on September 11, 1899. The company drilled to November 2 1899 and then took passage on the U.S.A. Olympia for the Philippine Islands at Manila on December 7, 1899 and was stationed at Malate Barracks. Howard was mustered out May 6, 1899 after serving almost two years. He died in the Veteran Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana on December 5, 1938 at the age of 59 year and five days. He is buried in South Cemetery in Greensfork, Wayne County, Indiana.
