Sarah Matilda Robertson Mygatt, born in New York, October 13, 1832, a daughter of Jacob A. Robertson and Helen Ackerman , married, October 27, 1858 Navy Lieutenant Jared Potter Kirtland Mygatt of Ohio. Mygatt, a graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., spent the greater portion of his adult life in the U.S. Navy.

Jared was the oldest son of Dr. Eli Mygatt and Lois Kirtland. His mother Lois, was the daughter of Dr. Jared P. Kirtland. Jared Mygatt served on the famous USS Constitution - "Old Ironsides" - (one of the original 5 US Navy ships approved by George Washington of which only 3 were built and of which it is the only one still in existence) as a midshipman for several years and advanced in his career to the level of Lieutenant prior to eventually having to resign due to illness. He died at the early age of 34 from tuberculosis (then known as "consumption" - a prevalent sailor's disease due to living in close quarters with other infected sailors for long periods of time).

While Sarah was the daughter of a noted doctor, she was also the granddaughter of the famous Scottish born but later American portrait and landscape painter, Archibald Robertson, who's father, William Robertson, was also a trained architect in Scotland. Archibald immigrated to America in 1791 and started his career painting the well known portraits of George Washington and his wife Martha. His brother, Alexander, also a noted painter immigrated one year later. The two brothers then started one of the first art schools in America, the Columbian Academy of Painting, and which also taught the art of architecture.

Prior to his death, Jared and Sarah had two sons - Robertson Kirtland Mygatt (1861-1919) and Otis Angelo Mygatt (1863-1941). His two sons both attained a high level of success in their life. Robertson, born in 1861, became a well known "Tonalist" landscape painter and married Emily Tyers - He is buried in Sleepy Hollow, Westchester, NY. Otis, born in 1863, was Harvard educated and became a successful engineer/inventor/business man who started the famous Holophane lighting company and is credited with starting the American Illumination Engineering Society and later while living in France with his wife Elizabeth McClellan Greene was a staunch supporter of the French people during WWI and WWII receiving two gold medals from the French government for their tireless support during the war. He is buried with his wife in the American Cathedral located in Paris, France.
