The son of Harry James and Myrtle (Kemp) Van Dolah, Harry, Jr. attended Indiana University where he received a B.S. degree in 1937, Purdue University, and the University of Detroit, where he obtained his M.S. degree in Chemistry.

After his 1940 marriage to Jean Bonner Meek, Harry pursued his love of chemistry in both IN and IL, serving as the Director of Research for the Chicago Vitreous Corp. in 1960. He obtained a patent for a "Method of Preparing Porcelain Enamel Frit for Drying Process Enamel" in 1961.

The Van Dolahs lived in Indianapolis, IN, and in the IL cities of Wheaton, Oak Park and Naperville. They parented a daughter and a son, and were affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
