Jean was the second daughter born to Homer and Ruth (Bonner) Meek. Following her graduation from high school, Jean attended Stevens College. A member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, she graduated from Butler University with a degree in Education. She taught school for several years.

In 1940, Jean married Harry James Van Dolah, Jr., a chemist, in Indianapolis, IN. To them were born a daughter and a son. The Van Dolah's resided in Indianapolis, IN and the cities of Wheaton, Oak Park and Naperville in IL. They were affiliated with the Presbyterian church in those places.

The Jean Van Dolah Memorial Revolving Loan Fund, a scholarship program for students majoring in chemistry at Wabash College in Crawfordsvile, IN, was established by Jean's husband and son, a 1966 graduate of the college.
