In 1904, Alex's Family had emigrated from Erdosmecske - Racmecske (Baranya county) Hungary. To avoid capture and denied emigration, they departed from a port in Germany.

Aboard ship their Father (whose family spoke German) declared his name was the Serbian spelling of "VUKAJLOVIC". (Every genealogist knows that spelling is through the ear of the scribe ! )

Alexander was the only American-born child of immigrant parents. He joined three elder siblings who were each born in Hungary = Gabe, John, and Caroline.

In America his Serbian (by blood) - Hungarian (by birth) Parents' name continued to evolve and was documented as:

-- COLOWITZ(s)

-- COLOWITCH (1910 Census)

-- CALLOVITS (1912 brother's marriage License)

-- KOLOVITZ (1920 Census)

-- CALONITZ (1930 Census)

-- CALLWITTS (1942 brother's WWII draft card)

-- CALOWITS (1949: his mother's OBIT: "Amelia, widow of Christian [sic] Calowits ...")

NOTE: A possible Hungarian spelling might also be: Kálovics ~ If you find two or more siblings - there, too, will be different spellings !

[His siblings: Gabriel # 74073241 - John # 94255518 - Carolina # 66645095 - Alexander # 62405237 + ALEX's parents: Amelia # 66644793 - Daniel # 66780616 ]
