DEAD AT 59

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Denton Funeral Home chapel for retired Carlsbad Police detective, Leo Bentley Armstrong. He died Saturday in Guadalupe Medical Center.

The Rev. Harry Brooks of the Hillcrest Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.

A member of the Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Armstrong came to Carlsbad in 1946. He had served as a 1st Lt. in the Air Force during World War II.

He worked for U.S. Potash Co. until 1967, after which he joined the Carlsbad police. He retired in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Armstrong, Carlsbad; a son, David Armstrong, Carlsbad; three daughters, Sue West and Janice Gibson, both of Carlsbad, and Peggy Armstrong, El Paso, Texas; a brother, Bill Armstrong, Carlsbad; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Le Roy Payne, Ralph Freeman, Billy Sadler, Dee Williams, David Leos and C.U. Finley.
