Enlistment Date: February 22, 1864.
Enlisted in Company H, Illinois 57th Infantry Regiment on March 8, 1864. Mustered out on July 7, 1865 at Louisville, KY.

Obituary from: The Rock Island Argus, May 9, 1932

"John Mapes, 97 years old, a veteran of the Civil War and former Henry County resident, died Thursday in the soldiers' and sailors' home at Quincy, according to word received by a daughter, Mrs. Carl Lorenzen of Hooppole.

Mr. Mapes was born in Canada, July 13, 1834, and came to Henry County with his parents, settling in Burns Township, when he was 6 years old. He married Abigail Vining, who died 22 years ago in California.

Mr. Mapes was the last Civil War veteran of this community. He served in the 57th Illinois infantry for three years. He was the tentmate of the former Frederick Schinleber of this place. Mr. Mapes was once a hunter and trapper and for years lived in Alba Township. His health was good until three years ago when he fractured his hip.

Of 12 children, the following survive: Mrs. Gladys Sodash of Eureka, California; Minnie Ayers, Mrs. Ada Houch and Mrs. Maude Washburn of Monravia, California; Mrs. Dora Hosfield of Watsonville, California; Mrs. Nettie Lorenzen of Hooppole; E. L. Mapes of Annawan, and Norman Mapes in Canada.

Funeral services were held in the Annawan Community Church yesterday afternoon and burial was in the Annawan Cemetery."
