Although the family lived in Giles Co., TN, Ernest was born in Georgia towards the end of the Civil War. My dad's cousin was told by her grandfather Alvia P. BROWN, Ernest's brother, that the family had a farm in Georgia and Ernest's maternal grandparents lived in Clarke Co., GA. Giles Co. was at the center of the war so the family might have fled to Georgia to be further from the front line. When Ernest's mother, Martha (WHARTON) BROWN, died just after his first birthday, she was buried outside Bethel, Giles Co., TN so I assume the family moved back to TN either after/during Sherman's march or after the war.

Like his father and many others earlier in the Brown family, Ernest became a Methodist preacher. He is listed in the 1900 Sparta, White, Co., 1910 Maury Co., and 1920 Nashville, Davidson Co., TN censuses as a minister or preacher.

Ernest was married 11 Nov 1886 to Emma Lena HENRY. They had two children, Mary Elizabeth and James Wharton BROWN.
