CORTLAND — Robert L. Baker, age 91, of Cortland, Ohio, died late Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2008, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.

Born Jan. 21, 1917, in Clifton Springs, N.Y., he was the son of the late Henry L. and Florence H. (Hollingsworth) Baker. Mr. Baker was formerly of Ashtabula and East Amherst, N.Y. Bob was a 1935 graduate of Oakwood Friends School and attended Niagara Falls High School. He graduated in 1940 with a degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University, where he played French horn in the ROTC marching and concert bands. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Bob retired from Occidental Petroleum in Niagara Falls and then worked for Detrex Chemical in Ashtabula, as a mechanical engineer. He received his PE (Professional Engineer) certification from the state of Ohio.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Toy Train Collectors Society in Buffalo, and was a member of the Men's Chorus of Western New York.

Bob was active with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Lueta E. (Baker) Baker, whom he married July 5, 1941; two daughters, Kathryn L. (Orville) Seeley of Roaming Shores, and Margaret B. (Douglas) Ford of Westerville; four grandchildren, Brian O. (Angel) Seeley, Kevin R. (Crystal) Seeley, Emily J. (Carl) Conrad and Ethan T. Ford; three great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; and many loving nieces and nephews.

His parents and one brother preceded him in death.

Graveside Services will be held at the Hillside Cemetery Chapel in Cortland at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, with the Rev. Duane Jesse officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to the Cortland City Fire Department or to the donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements are being handled by SHAFER-WINANS FUNERAL CHAPEL in Cortland.
