PAINTSVILLE - William Garland Bailey,
88, died Wed, Nov 24, 2010. He was born July 28, 1922, to Warrick and Suda Bailey. The youngest of three boys, he grew up in Paintsville, KY, where he lived his entire life. Bill was educated in the Paintsville City Schools and at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. As was the case for Americans living in the forties, WWII interrupted his life. In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, he began a loving relationship with life-long friend Jane Walker Clay. He joined the Navy and became a pilot stationed at Pensacola Air Station. Later, he was transferred to Dallas where he and Jane Clay were married in 1945. After the war, they returned to Paintsville to make their lives, to build their family, and to leave their mark on Johnson County. Bill joined Citizens National Bank in 1945, was named cashier in 1958, vice president in 1964, and senior vice president in 1975. He was a graduate of the Kentucky School of Banking and the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers School at the University of Wisconsin. In 1986 he was named executive vice president of Citizens National Bank and vice president of Citizens National Corporation. In 1972 he was elected to the Board of Directors. Bill Bailey was a member of the Paintsville Rotary Club and the First United Methodist Church. In 2005 he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni award from the Paintsville High School Alumni Association. In 2006 he was presented the Paintsville/Johnson County Citizen of the Century Award by the Paintsville Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. Bill Bailey was known for his compassion, kindness, and love - whether lending money to a family in need as an officer at Citizens National, singing in the choir at First Methodist, supporting a friend or neighbor, or on the floor playing with his granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and wife. He is survived by his daughter Nancye Thompson, (Lexington); son Ret. Air Force General Clay Bailey and daughter-in-law Joyce (Tampa); three granddaughters Sarah Thompson Fitzgerald, Carrie Bailey Larson, and Jane Collins Thompson, and two great grandsons, Clay and Christopher. Service will be 1pm Mon, at the First United Methodist Church. Visit 11am-1pm Mon, atthe church. Arr. By the Paintsville Funeral Home.
