Curtis Barbee, born in 1903, attended Lovelady schools, Austin College and Lon Morris College, where he met and later married Eva John Young of Athens and LaRue. They were married in Del Rio, Texas, where Eva John was teaching school in 1926. Eva John was President of the Texon, Texas Youth Center, which she helped organize. She taught the teenage Sunday School class in Texon and was Counselor for Methodist Youth Fellowship in the Big Lake, Texas Methodist Church for three years. Eva John was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service in the United Methodist Church in Big Lake. After moving to Lovelady, she continued this work with Methodist Women, serving locally as an officer and as a district officer in the Huntsville district.
Curtis played baseball for Lon Morris College, the Texas League, East Texas League, Del Rio, and the Texon Oilers (a semi-pro team of the Bi Lake Oil Company). He worked for this oil company for 28 years. He was active in church work serving as a Sunday School teacher for young boys and also managing a baseball team of the same boys in Texon. Curtis served on the Administrative Board of the Gib Lake United Methodist Church and continued this service as Chairman of the Administrative Board of the Lovelady Methodist Church, he is a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 539.
Curtis and Eva John's children are Peggy June and Mary Ann June graduated from Reagan County High School (Big Lake, Texas) and received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas. She taught school in Mason, Odessa, Corpus Christi, and now, Kerrville. She married her college classmate Clyde Bone, Jr. and they have one daughter, Louanne. Clyde received his B.A. from Sul Ross University and his M.S. from Texas A&M University in Kingsville and is now teaching science in Kerrville. Mary Ann graduated from Reagan County High School, received her B.B.A. from North Texas State University and married Donald Meroney in Sinton, Texas in 1958. She is now a secretary with Jefferson Chemical Company in Austin. Donald graduated from Reagan County High School, received his B. S. degree from the university of Texas at Austin and is now teaching math in Pflugerville. They have one son, Mark Patrick.
