Russell married Norma Jean Frazier after completing school. To this union, there were three children, two of which preceeded him in death.
Russell later married Eloise Wise. To this union, one child was born.
Russell also married Regina Warrior and he was blessed with the addition of three sons to his family.
Russell was preceeded in death by his father, mother, sons, Russell Jr. and Everett Chandler, sister, Minnie Wallace and brother, Obra Chandler.
