Jacob Funk died at the home of his son, Deane, located north of McLean, Illinois. Some three hours earlier, his brother, LaFayette, had died at his home near Shirley.
Jacob was the third son born to Isaac and Casandra Sharp Funk. He was married to Miss Mary A. Waltman Nov. 18, 1858, at Lincoln. Three children were born to this union.
Jacob grew up with his parents on Funk Farms and at the age of twelve went to Chicago and lived there for a time with his uncle, Absalom Funk, where he herded cattle on the outskirts of the town. After a stay of ten months, he returned to his father. After a second stay in Chicago, he returned home and remained with his father on the farm until his marriage.
When Jacob began to farm the land he owned, only a small portion was improved. He cultivated the land and increased possessions to 2,500 acres. Jacob and his sons managed the farms and in addition raised a large number of horses, cattle and hogs.
In 1878, Jacob and LaFayette organized the State National Bank of Bloomington. Jacob served as President of the bank for thirty-six years.
