Batson, Rev. John D, was born of English parents. He began to take part in religious meetings when 12 years of age, and seven years later, united with the Free Will Baptist Church at Fairwater, Wis., when he was ordained Sept 29, 1861. He married Harriet E. Wing, Oct. 17, 1858.
They settled immediately in Dakota Co. Minn, and he began to preach in that new country as congregations could be gathered.
He served in theCivil War, in the 4th Minn Vols., Co. I. until the close of the war. He continued this work and in 1869 organized the Castle Rock church, and later the East Castle Rock church, both of which have been continually favored with his efficient ministry.
He and his wife had nine children, and three had already died by 1889, His education was obtained at Ripon and Carleton Colleges. His sister, Mrs. W.I. Price, was a missionary in Burmah, at this time.
He served for years as clerk of Minnesota YM and a member of the State Mission Board, being highly esteemed by his brethren.
