Mr. Freeland was the Kansas secretary of agriculture from 1950 to 1976. He was the associate editor of the Kansas Farmer magazine and also wrote for the Corn Belt Farm Dailies in Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City and St. Louis. He held a bachelor of science degree conferred by Kansas State University in 1937.
He was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Effingham, the son of Rolly and Florence Henry Freeland. He had resided in Topeka for 58 years.
He married Marguerite Hargrove on Dec. 25, 1937, in Effingham. She preceded him in death April 25, 2002.
Survivors include a brother, Marvin Freeland, Des Moines, Iowa; a son, Kent Freeland, San Diego; a grandson, Scott Freeland, Tallahassee, Fla.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Glass, Atlanta, Ga.; and a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Glass, Atlanta, Ga.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel, Topeka. A graveside service and burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham.
Mr. Freeland will lie in state after 2 p.m. Wednesday and until service time Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel .
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heart of America Hospice, 3715 S.W. 29th, Topeka, 66614.
