Thayer worked in the oilfields as a rig builder and later became a supervisor. He was very agile in climbing up and coming down the rigs, jumping from crosspiece to crosspiece until he reached the ground in record speed.
Thayer enjoyed having a beer with his friends and loved to let the good times roll. He liked a good brawl from time to time and was quite a tough guy. Thayer was good working with his hands, able to make various things and carve little wooden animals. Thayer enjoyed fishing, especially crawdad fishing in the Los Angeles River near his Gardena home. He and his wife Boots had a little pet parakeet named Tweety Bird that he adored.
Thayer passed away on October 31, 1959 due to cirrhosis of the liver.
