Hazel Elizabeth (Bentley) Hounihan McAleer, 94, formerly of Staunton, died Monday, November 22, 2010 at Hospice Atlanta.

She was born December 28, 1915 in Lunenburg County, a daughter of Willie Gregory and Lelia Elizabeth (Boothe) Bentley.

Ms. McAleer, who owned Rask Florist for over 30 years, was well known in the Staunton community for her floral design talent. She served on the board of directors for the Virginia District of the Florist Telegraph Delivery Association. She also served as a judge at the National Capital Flower and Garden Show in Washington, D.C. She was often asked to speak and give floral design demonstrations to various women's clubs and organizations. A consummate entertainer, she was known and loved in both Staunton and Maurertown for her extravagant parties. After retiring and selling her Virginia home, she moved to Vero Beach. There she served two terms as both a member and chair of Vista Del Mar Condominiums board of directors.

In 2005, she moved to Atlanta to be closer to her family. There, she was very active in the Sunrise Buckhead Senior Community.

Ms. McAleer lived by her favorite quote "Learn something new every day. You never know when you will need it".

While in Staunton, she took various continuing education classes at Mary Baldwin College in architecture, art, and floral design. She loved to travel, where she could visit and learn about new gardens, architecture, and museums. Her other favorite pastimes included reading, playing bridge, antiquing, walking, bird watching, and spending time with friends and family.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Lynn Thatcher of Atlanta; two great-grandsons, Charlie and Will Thatcher; step-children, Kim, Katie, Glynda, and Karen McAleer; one step-grandchild, Robin Sutton; and one step-great-granddaughter, Zoe Sutton.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas J. Hounihan, jr ; her second husband, Michael Edward "Mac" McAleer; her daughter, Elizabeth H. "Peggy" Hounihan; and sister, Hilda B. Harvey

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Harold W. "Pete" Campbell. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
