Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. He entered the Union Army on April 29, 1861 as a Private in Company E, 10th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, a unit enlisted for three months. Promoted to 1st Sergeant, he was honorably mustered out on July 29, 1861. He was the commissioned as Captain and commander of Company A, 27th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on August 23, 1861. He was promoted to Major on April 15, 1862 and then Lieutenant Colonel and regimental commander on February 23, 1863. He would lead the unit through the end of this service, receiving a promotion to Colonel on April 28 1864, bur was mustered out on September 20, 1864 before the promotion could become official. He was subsequently brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant conduct at the Battle of Stone's River, and for meritorious services during the war".
