Samuel Xerxes Kerr was the son of William Kerr, Sr.* and Mary Ann Grove. "Xerxes," is the Greek form of the Persian name Khshayarsha which meant "ruler over heroes."

He married Eliza Jane Wallace (daughter of John) and had 9 known Kerr children:

On the 1860 Dist. 1, Augusta Co., VA census, I found farmer Samuel H Kerr, 47, with $12,450 in real estate; Eliza Kerr, 48; Elisabeth, 20; William, 19; Bruce, 17; Lucretia, 15; John, 13; Greenlee, 11, all VA born.

Daughter Margaret Lucretia Kerr, 17, born in Augusta Co. to Saml Kerr and Eliza J Wallace, married Wm A Curry, 24, born in Daughterty Co., GA to John Curry and Mary S Crawford, on 1 May 1862 in Augusta Co., VA. They were both single.

On 25 Feb 1868, an ad was placed in the Staunton Spectator by SAMUEL X. KERR for the heirs, Summerdean, Augusta Co., VA. Summerdean Farm, Mills &c., for RENT. On Saturday, the 19th day of February, next, the Merchant Mill, Farm, Store House, &c., which descended from Wm. Kerr, deceased, will be put up at public renting. The value of the property is well known, and persons desiring to lease will do well to examine it. His brother William died in 1867 (photo on right).

On the 1870 Riverheads, Augusta Co., VA census, I found farmer Saml X Kerr, 55 with $16,000. in real estate and $6000. in personal property; farmer Wm S., 25; medical student John P., 23; farm worker Meredith G., 21; Lucretia Curry, 27; Edgar Curry, 4, all VA born.

Samuel X Kerr was born in abaout 1815 in Summerdean, VA. He was a pork packer and the spouse of Mary E P Kerr. On 19 Mar 1886, he died age 71, in Staunton, VA. VA Deaths and Burials, 1853-1912, Familysearch.

His obit was in the 24 Mar 1886 Staunton Spectator, also on the right.

Tuesday of last week, he was stricken with paralysis, dying three days later. He was the last remaining son of his parents. A few years ago, he retired to the city, after selling his farm near Middlebrook. He sold produce at his store on Augusta Street. His wife survives.
