Dr. Richard J. DesLauriers, 81, died Monday, November 22, 2010 at home. He was born in Springfield to the late Joseph A. and Cecile E. (Rioux) DesLauriers.

Richard was a graduate of Assumption Prep in Worcester in 1946, Assumption College in 1950 and from Tufts School of Dental Medicine in 1953. Following dental school he served in the United States Army as a Captain from 1953-1957. He worked in his dental practice in Chicopee Falls from 1958-2001, and was a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society as well as the Valley District Dental Society.

Richard was an avid mountain hiker and member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, loved hiking the White Mountains in New Hampshire and on four occasions, he hiked nearly the entire length of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela "Walk of St. James" in France into Spain.

He was a 43 year communicant of St. Mary's Church in Longmeadow, active in their Choir and also the Springfield Diocesan Choir. He was also a past member of the President's Council at Assumption College in Worcester, and the Board of Trustees for Chicopee Savings Bank. Richard was very dedicated to his Franco-American heritage and in November 2005 was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Romney as a member of the American and Canadian French Cultural Exchange Commission. He was also an avid American and European historian and loved classical music and played the violin.

Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Loraine E. (Cella) DesLauriers, November 25, 2008. He is survived by his loving children, Richard C. DesLauriers and his wife, Christine of Franklin, MA, David F. DesLauriers of Cambridge, MA and Noelle D. Roberts and her husband, Dr. L. Willis Roberts of Granville, his brother, Pierre J. DesLauriers of Springfield, VA his sisters, Pauline D. Zambarano and her husband Richard of Woodbridge, CT and Marguerite D. Morin of Tualatin, OR and his cherished grandson, Stephen.

Richard's funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:15 AM from the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home 220, N. Main St., East Longmeadow followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in St. Mary's Church 509 Longmeadow St. Longmeadow. Rites of Committal will follow in Longmeadow Cemetery, Williams Street, Longmeadow. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home. Contributions in his name may be directed to the St. Mary's Academy, 519 Longmeadow St. Longmeadow, MA 01106.
