Schuette remembered as friend, civic booster
Former co-owner of downtown department store dies following stroke

MANITOWOC — Friends and family Wednesday shared remembrances of August "Augie" Schuette, 83, businessman and community activist, who died of a stroke Tuesday at Aurora Medical Center, according to his family. "The day before Augie died, he was waiting for The Salvation Army to give him more bell-ringing opportunities," stepdaughter Cathy Burback said Wednesday of his seeking donations for its Red Kettle campaign.
"He already had assignments through Manitowoc Noon Rotary, but was looking for more," Burback said.
"He was a wonderful man, very kind to everybody, very positive with a good sense of humor," said Lorraine Schuette, his older sister and partner for nearly 40 years in running the downtown Manitowoc Schuette Bros. Department Store, founded in 1849. Located at the corner of Eighth and Jay streets, the store over the years sold everything from clothing to appliances to furniture to groceries, before closing it in 1994.

Dedicated Businessman
"Augie was warm, accepting and always encouraging for any project he thought might be of value to the city of Manitowoc, and, particularly, downtown," said Kevin Crawford, former Manitowoc mayor. "His dedication to the Schuette Bros. store kept the downtown buoyant through some of the city's most difficult times. That department store anchored the downtown for years and years," Crawford said. The store was just a few blocks north of his great-grandparents' home where Schuette was born, said Anne Schuette, one of three children he had with his first wife, Phyllis, who died in 1977. Augie remarried 29 years ago, with Shirley's two children, and now 10 grandchildren between the five adult sons and daughters, creating one wonderful blended family, said Anne Schuette and Cathy Burback. "Augie was a great grandfather," said Burback, who has played flute for the Manitowoc Symphony and Lakeshore Wind Ensemble. Burback said her stepfather always enjoyed Capitol Civic Centre performances "and was very supportive, very giving financially to the community."

Schuette was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International, symbolic of his putting into action the organization's creed, "Service Above Self." "Augie was always there, ready to pitch in," said Sue Sippel, a fellow Manitowoc Noon Rotary member and past president of the group. "He always made an effort to be welcoming to new members. He was a good ambassador for the club." Lee Davis, owner of WCUB Radio, was active in Rotary with Schuette. "He's a class guy … if you pick out five people the community is lucky to have, he was one of them. This is a big loss," Davis said.
Schuette's community support also included being an early backer of the new YMCA, built on Maritime Drive, which opened in 1969, Anne Schuette said. For many years her father played racquetball several times a week at the YMCA. She will miss her every Thursday morning breakfasts with her father at the Two Rivers McDonald's restaurant. As a native son of Manitowoc, she said her father "was very interested in the whole history of the community and was active in the Manitowoc County Historical Society. "When his classmates came back to town, they would contact him to find out what was going on," she said of the Lincoln High School class of 1944 graduate who helped organize many of its reunions. Pete Burback, husband of Cathy, bought the department store from Schuette. "He was my mentor and taught me so much, not only about business, but life. "Augie would give a helping hand to anyone and within five minutes of meeting him could take you from complete stranger to feeling like he was your best friend." The Pfeffer Funeral Home is coordinating pending funeral arrangements. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church-Waldo Boulevard site with the Rev. Dan Felton officiating. Burial of cremated remains will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends during visitation Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, 928 S. 14th St., Manitowoc, and at the church on Saturday from noon until the time of the service.
