He was born in Monroe County, Missouri and moved to Texas and Taylor County in 1885. He hauled water for Abilene in the days before a water system was installed. Also in the town's early days, he was employed at the T&P freight depot and worked for a time for Wooten Wholesale Grocery Co. and was engaged in carpentry. He married Ida Kissner and moved to the Colony Hill community four miles south of Abilene. He was engaged in farming until his retirement. Children are: Vera (Holwagler), Lawrence Hays Indiana S. Hays, and an Infant
