Livy enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 19 March 1862 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company G, 1st (Orr's) South Carolina Rifles. The Register of Officers and Soldiers killed shows that he was born in Chester District, South Carolina and was killed during battle at Cold Harbor, Virginia on 27 June 1862. This record also showed that he was last paid to 1 May 1862 and had $25.00 due him. (info taken from CMSR)

(special thanks to GMG #47391530 for full name, birth/death dates & place, link to parents and the following info) Isaac Livingston Grier, a student of theology in the Associate Reformed Church, was born in York County, South Carolina near the present town of Clover on August 28th 1841. He was the first born of Rev. Robert Calvin Grier and Barbara B. Moffatt.

After his parents moved to Due West, Isaac attended the schools in that village, entering in due time Erskine College and graduating in the Class of 1860, with his younger brother, William Moffatt Grier. Isaac receiving the first honor of his class.

Isaac then entered Erskine Theological Seminary at Due West, but on the breaking out of the Civil War volunteered as a soldier in Orr's Rifles, a company made up largely of troops from Abbeville and Anderson Counties, South Carolina. On the 27th of June, 1862, Private Isaac L. Grier was killed in the battle of Gaines' Mill, Virginia.
