Robert A. was the fourth of seven children born to Robert and Mary Logan Elliott. Robert, along with his brother Anthony and several other like minded people, began a Presbyterian Church that took a strong stance against slavery, Monroe Presbyterian. Robert was a conductor on the underground railroad. He married Catharine Patton on December 17, 1836 in Jefferson County, Indiana, and together they had nine children: Mary Ann, James Hezekiah, John Robert, Susan Laurette, Sarah Catherine, Samuel Alexander, Frances Eva, Martha Jane, and Anthony Parker Clark Elliott.
