At death he lived at 415 E. 3rd Street, Carthage. He was widowed at the time. He was married to Rebecca Anna Ramey Frey January 13, 1884 in the home of the bride's father. Rev. C. J. Polston officiated the marriage ceremony. The Frey's were blessed with 13 children. One child died in infancy.

His date of birth was Oct. 2, 1859. He was the son of Lewis W. Frey. He died December 20, 1952. His father, Lewis W. Frey came to America from France in 1847 on the ship, The Kate Hunter, docking in New York. His grandparents were Peter and Christine Frey who also came to America from France on the ship The Kate Hunter in June 1847. Lewis' brother, Pierre (also known as Peter Frey, Sr.) also traveled with the family to New York. The family settled in PA for some time prior to migrating to Vienna, Maries County, Missouri. James' siblings were born in Pennsylvania. His siblings were Lewis and Elizabeth (Betty)Frey.
According to death certificate he was a retired blacksmith. He retired in about 1932.

After their marriage, James William and his wife, Rebecca Anna lived in Phenix, Missouri. Phenix, MO was considered a quarry company town. James worked in the Carthage Marble Quarry as a blacksmith as well as farming land in Kendricktown, Marion Township, MO.
Cause of death chronic myocarditis. He was hospitalized from December 17th to December 20th, 1952. He fractured a hip about 5 years prior to his death. Dr. George H. Wood was the attending physician.
The information for the death certificate was provided by his daughter Mrs. George (Elizabeth Frey) Topper of Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.
James noted in the LDS records that his mother, Mary Ann Vaughn died in 1860. His grandmother, Christine who was a widow at the time of death was buried on the old Frey farm in Maries County.
