Possibly the same Gideon Ashmore who, along with Hiram Rutherford, was involved in the famous "Matson Slave Case" tried in Coles County, with Abraham Lincoln representing the slave owner, Matson. Gideon was an abolitionist and had given refuge to slaves owned by Matson who had fled in fear of being returned to Kentucky and sold. Info supplied by distant cousin Rosemary Nordstrom.
